Dual Fuel Entry Routes

Universal Skills collaborate with employers to ensure the course structure is right for their company to enable them to increase and upskill their workforce to meet the future needs of the UK green energy sector, as we anticipate a world with lower carbon emissions. Currently ‘green skills’ is defined as the knowledge, abilities, values and attitude needed to live in and develop a sustainable and efficient society.

Our training provision for the Dual Fuel Smart Metering apprenticeships is a 13 month programme which will see apprentices train within our Wakefield centre as well as undertake course assessments, engage in wider learning and receive technical qualifications.

With Smart Meter installation targets pushed back until 2024, demand for Smart Metering apprentices is at an all time high.

Universal Skills remain committed to helping providers equip their workforce with the skill set to meet the renewed targets, providing comprehensive and bespoke training from our Wakefield facility.

Upon completing training through Universal Skills, apprentices will be able effectively carry all these skills.

Who is this
apprenticeship for?

The Dual Fuel apprenticeship course is ideal for those who are looking to start a new career within the gas and power industry. Whether you're 18 and out of school or college or older and looking for a new career path this apprenticeship is designed to accommodate individuals with various backgrounds and levels of experience.

General Entry Requirements

It’s preferable that our apprentices hold a GCSE in both Maths and English graded A-C/9-4 (or equivalent) however functional skills sessions are provided led by our dedicated functional skills tutor for those that need to attain a Level 1 and or above.

If you have a gas CMA or MET1 qualification or have a MOCOPA, we would advise contacting us as we can look to enroll individuals on an upskilling course to Dual Fuel as an alternative.

Course Structure

The training Universal Skills offers is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies required to become a Dual Fuel installer, whilst also providing qualifications which contribute towards the completion of a Dual Fuel Smart Metering apprenticeship.

There are two distinct learning paths that apprentices can take when training with Universal Skills.

Apprentices can either start their training within Gas first and then move on to Power, or vice versa. This only affects the order of training between months 1-5, after which point, each apprentice will follow the same training plan. The learning path that an apprentice starts on is usually determined by what works best for the employer and the apprentices.

An apprentices time will usually be split between learning within the Wakefield training centre and working with the employer. Apprentices will be required to produce write ups and undertake assessments to receive qualifications relevant to passing their apprenticeship.

Universal Skills prides itself on comprehensive apprenticeship programme, designed to offer all apprentices
the training they need to kick start their career within the smart metering industry.
Our apprenticeship provision is driven by three guiding principles:

Intent

Universal Skills work with employers and awarding organisations to provide apprentices with present knowledge and skills to set clear goals and opportunities through education.

Implement

Knowledge, skills and behaviours are gained throughout the programme. Apprentices progress through observation and interaction, including frequent evaluations.

Impact

Apprentices develop detailed knowledge and skills across the programme. This is reflected in results from tests and examinations that meet and often exceed employer expectations.
