The City & Guilds 2391-50 course is designed for anyone who is required to conduct Initial Verification of electrical Installation. This qualification is particularly relevant to those wishing to verify new installations but not necessarily required to carry out periodic inspection and testing.

Inspection and Testing

(C&G 2391-52) InspectiON and Testing

The Inspection and Testing course is ideal for those who are required to both verify new work as well as periodically test and assess the condition of existing installations in line with 18th edition wiring regulations. It is therefore best suited to those who are actively involved within the inspection and testing process who are looking to become formally qualified.

Inspection, Testing & Certification Domestic & Commercial course.

This qualification helps you to develop the knowledge and practical skills required to professionally carry out inspection and testing on electrical installations.

There are two course options for candidates to choose between: 

1. Initial Verification of Electrical Installations
2. Initial and Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations

Both qualifications cover initial verification of electrical installs and certification in line with 2391-50, but the (2391-52) Inspection and Testing course goes a step further, covering both Periodic Inspection and Testing theory.

Course Information

This qualification is intended for practicing installers or electricians who want to expand their skills and knowledge in Initial Verification of electrical installations. The qualification awarded makes up one of the underpinning knowledge requirements to join or register under a Competent Persons Scheme. 

Course Entry Requirements

This course is intended for practising electricians, who either have limited experience of inspection and testing or those who may not be as confident  in the correct methods of verifying their own installs. 

Additionally candidates must:

  • Be minimum age 18 years old (mandatory)
  • Be up to date with the latest 18th Edition wiring regulations
  • Some knowledge of inspection and testing of electrical installations

Course Content

This 5 day Initial Verification  course covers the following:

  • Safe Isolation
  • Automatic Disconnection of Supply
  • Fault, basic and additional protection
  • Earthing Systems
  • Sequence of tests
  • Single and Three phase testing
  • Theory principles
  • Interpretation of results by use of formulas
  • Completion of certification

Course Structure

The Initial Verification course include both practical and theory based classes and workshops, and concludes with one multiple-choice online test and a practical task, both of which determine whether you pass the course.

This course can be extended to 7 days based on the candidates knowledge and level of experience. 

Candidates should ensure they bring a copy of the IET Code of Practice Guidance Note 3 & 18th Edition Wiring Regulations book (we can provide these at a cost). Both books are used throughout the course and during the assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the entry requirements?

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and must hold existing electrical qualifications.

Can I do the course remotely?

This course is currently all delivered face to face at our training centre in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

Do I need to purchase any extra course material?

Candidates must bring a copy of their 18th Edition Wiring Regulations textbook. These can be purchased directly with us or bought separately if you don't have a copy.

Candidates will receive a copy of the Guidance Note 3 Resource book when joining the course. 

Can I Just take the assessments rather than the full course?

Assessment days are available to book on their own if you do not wish to take part in the full course. Please note that no prior training is offered with this booking, and you will attend for assessments only.
